| General Overview | Dessa is very curious about her world and the people in it. She makes friends easily because of her normally calm exterior until they find out she’s a counselor. | Personal History | Dessa was raised on Betazoid by her father's sister after the death of her parents. Being Human, her childhood was spent learning to understand facial expressions and body language that would clue her into the silent communications of Betazoids. She learned at a young age that it was useless to keep things hidden, and over the years developed a sense of curiosity. Though growing up there was very different from Earth, she learned to really love the people and their customs. She was home-schooled along with her four brothers Andrew, Colin, Quinn and Royce. Her relationship with her brothers was complicated because of a large age difference, but she remains close to them as an adult. She keeps in regular touch with them despite travelling all over the universe. Family to her is precious, and she includes friends as family. At home, her aunt ran a tight schedule of classes ranging from technology to gardening, as she believed one must be prepared to survive anything. Dessa learned to appreciate any alone time she had, and to this day will organize every single second of her agenda for the day to give her as much free time as possible. Her aunt was also a very loving woman who would have given the shirt off her back to any who needed it, and Dessa learned from her example; she has always tried to help others no matter what the cost. As an adult, she joined Starfleet Academy with an interest in helping others cope with difficult situations. After she graduated, she joined Starfleet Medical with an interest in counseling. After the Dominion war Dessa saw extreme devastation for many families who lost loved ones with the destruction of so many Federation starships. It was a turning point in her life and she decided she was needed more than ever. Always a lover of learning, she was almost sad when she finished, but quickly got over it when she was assigned to the USS Berlin as a counselor. Shortly after, she met Jacob Phillips, a Lieutenant in the Science department. She fell in love, but the relationship did not last past her being assigned to the USS Truman a year later. She discovered he was seeing another woman and, although Dessa is willing to enter into other relationships, she is cautious. Her third assignment was the USS Gryphon where she made friends with the vivacious Lieutenant Janelle Blanchet who often dragged her along on her dating escapades. While Dessa appreciated the sentiment she never quite enjoyed being the wingman. Dessa, while friendly, figured out that she was much more attracted to personality than looks and would have rather had dinner and a philosophical discussion. After leaving the USS Gyphon she remained friends with Janelle and they often talked on subspace, mostly about Dessa’s lack of dating life. Dessa usually answers her with a smile. Finally on the USS Clement she was promoted to Chief counselor and enjoyed several years of happy service with little to distress or vex her. Before transferring to the USS Omaha she decided to take the next step in her career and attend command classes in her free time. Though she doesn’t intend to ever become a Captain she found the classes had useful skills and didn’t mind taking the bridge during the occasional night shift. After two year she was then transferred to the USS Gladiator as Chief Counselor and Second Officer. Dessa is well adept at venting her emotions in a healthy manner so they do not interfere with her duties. Her cheerfulness is genuine, and she excels at accepting issues from others as she helps them work through their troubles. Situations have to be very dire for them to have a lasting effect on her. She is human however, and not impervious to feeling troubled every now and then. This does not normally last more than a few days and she is back to her old self. |
